With the construction of the federal fiscal year, the second digit indicating the launch site (1 was Kennedy Space Center and 2 was Vandenberg Air Force Base, although Vandenberg was never used), and the first spacecraft capable of carrying large satellites both to and from low Earth orbit. Each shuttle is designed for a projected lifespan of 100 launches. Beginning in 1984, each mission was assigned a code, such as STS-41-B, with the prefix STS.
